Odds & Ends Compendium

2/365, by wanderlustphotoThis Odds & Ends Compendium is the catch-all for resources that are worth sharing but don’t fit into any of the other current compendiums.

As with all Compendiums, the focus here is on quality rather than quantity. Ever curious, I’m constantly scanning, collecting, testing, exploring, hunting, and gathering.

The good stuff is worth waiting for.

Happy browsing!

BOOKS IN GENERAL

Amazon is well-known as a book seller for a reason. There’s so much information on their website, it’s become more than a place to buy. I use it as a general reference database, to do things like discovering additional books on a topic. As an example, if, on the Amazon page for Elaine Aron’s book The Highly Sensitive Person, you scroll down the page, you’ll come to a row of book cover images under the heading “Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought,” which are usually on the same topic. The scroll buttons at the left and the right of the images can be used to see more.

MOVIES

IMDB, the Internet Movie Database, claims to be “the biggest, best, most award-winning movie and TV site on the planet,” and I don’t have any problem believing them. It’s like the Amazon of the movie world: everything seems to be there, from who was in that one film to when was she in that old film, what’s new, what’s coming soon, and when’s the DVD available? Television shows are covered, too, along with so much else that it’s mind-boggling.

PRINTING

Green Printer takes sustainable printing to new heights. Their online ordering systems are extremely easy to use, and they have lots of satisfied customers from all over North America to prove it. Most importantly, they are dedicated not only to providing easy access to sustainable printing of small and large jobs, they are also intent on changing things at the foundation, innovating and pushing the printing industry to higher standards of sustainability.

SEARCH ENGINES

www.bananaslug.com takes web searching outside the box. Type in the search terms, then choose a category from the list provided and a random word from that category will be added to your search. This is especially useful for searches that normally produce a huge number of hits because it narrows the results in random ways. I’ve found exquisitely perfect websites using this search engine – sites I’m unlikely to have ever found without it.
